What is a CIP System?
CIP cleaning, also referred to as Clean-In-Place cleaning.
The CIP system is an automated system for cleaning the inner surfaces of food and beverage processing pipes, processing containers, storage tanks, screw chillers, mixers, homogenizers, and equipment commonly used in process plants and related accessories without dismantling the processing process.
The CIP process involves passing cleaning fluid through the surface to remove product soil. Unlike manual cleaning or clean-out-of-place (COP), CIP does not require disassembly or removal of equipment.
On the contrary, when parts cannot be cleaned in place and must be disassembled from the process, cop method can be used. Typical process parts cleaned out in part gaskets and cabinet gaskets include hoses, clamps, fittings, scale buckets, and other disassembled process components.
Each product or application requires different parameter combinations and levels. For example, by increasing the temperature and chemical concentration, oily residues can be removed more effectively, and this effect has little effect. On the contrary, by increasing operation and time, the cleaning efficiency of viscous and viscous residues is higher, but the concentration may have little effect on cleaning.
In every plant, there are many process pipelines, vessels and areas that require CIP. All them are called a circuit. The circuit shall be assessed separately to decide each parameter specific setting point.
Whether CIP cleaning or on-site cleaning, in order to achieve cleaning and hygiene, it is necessary to understand the basic cleaning principles of TA CT - time, function, chemistry and temperature. These cleaning principles were proposed by Herbert Sinar, a chemical engineer, in 1959. He wrote an educational book on automatic washing machines, mainly for housewives. He proposed four cleaning factors, time, action, chemistry and temperature, and defined the results of the cleaning process. (these factors are represented in siner's circle, see Figure 1.)
CIP System Design
CIP slide is the core of CIP. CIP slide rail provides necessary flow, temperature and conductivity for all cleaning circuits through automatic control to ensure correct time.
Although there are many differences in design, almost all CIP slides have common components that are critical to their function. These components include one or more water tanks, a pump, flow meters, heat exchangers, temperature transmitters, conductivity meters, and associated valves and piping.
In the health industry, many CIP systems are designed in a modular way. Modular systems are more popular than traditional "paste" systems because they can be manufactured off-site and installed after completion. The modular system greatly reduces installation and start-up time, thereby reducing exposure to manufacturing processes in the facility and reducing plant downtime.
Other CIP design features to consider: two tanks or no two, this is a question.
When establishing CIP cleaning system, single tank, double tank, multi tank and multi loop designs are optional. Some systems may require multiple water tanks to avoid allergen cross contamination or to improve sustainability by capturing the final flushing water in the cycle. Other processes can increase capacity through multi loop systems, essentially allowing customers to clean multiple processes and products at the same time.
"When operating a single tank system, you have to wait for a tank to be filled and discharged at each step of a cycle. Add a second tank dedicated to chemicals to allow the reuse of the chemical, and a third tank to allow the flushing recovery step to capture the flushing water in the previous cycle and reuse it in the pre flushing step of the next cycle," cresner explained. (see Figure 2)
Although manual cleaning is necessary in some areas of the facility, no matter how strict it is, it will prevent consistency and repeatability. This type of cleaning introduces human error and negligence in the process. Automated processes mitigate this type of error and oversight by allowing the computer to execute a set of instructions at a specified level in the same way at a time. If the parameter is not met, the system will provide a warning to show which areas do not meet the standard. With this level of control, the facility can ensure that all parameters are met and cleaned as required.
In addition to the consistency and repeatability of CIP system, data tracking and recording are becoming more and more important due to the food safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Accurate data records provide the information needed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the cleaning process, which is crucial in rare product recall cases. A good CIP system will allow tracking and recording of all key parameters.
If properly designed and built, a powerful CIP system is an investment in the safety of your brand and those who enjoy it.
